First eco-friendly food hub in hyderabad city soon

Hi-Tec City: Soon, the city is going to gets its first eco-friendly food hub right opposite Shilparamam stretch, Hi-Tech City. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is planning to set up 50 kiosks and this would be the first no single-use plastic food vending zone in South India.

Also, this zone would have a specially-built kiosks made of recycled plastic materials. Speaking to The Hans India, D Hari Chandana, Zonal Commissioner, West Zone, said, "We have planned a food hub in the city, and it is the replica of Mumbai's Chowpatty and Ahmedabad's Khau Galli.

The lane would be free of single-use plastic; the vendors would serve food in special bio-degradable plastic, which is made from corn-starch. It easily dissolves in water and it looks exactly like plastic. The vendors would not be using any plastic products. And, for customers seeking parcels from the vendors, food would be packed in corn-starch boxes.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) would be training vendors to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in their kiosks and also would certify them. "The budget for this project is around Rs 50 lakh and each kiosk measures 2 x 2- mt length x breadth and height is 1.8 mt.

The works have already started in the last week of September and would be completed by second week of December. Already, the framework is completed and only finishing touches are being done. All this recycled plastic material is imported from Ahmedabad recycle factory," said Chinna Reddy, executive engineer, Serilingampally.
