GHMC clears 8,000 metric tonnes waste across hyderabad

Hyderabad: GHMC cleared 8,000 metric tonnes of waste on Thursday alone. While the city produces about 4,500 metric tonnes daily, GHMC cleared 8,000 metric tonnes on Thursday due to Ganesh immersion programs in the city.

The waste which was collected from morning to evening was sent to 17 transfer stations. GHMC appointed 9,849 sanitation workers specially to clear the waste along the 391-km Ganesh Shoba Yatra.

Additional waste was generated due to large number of devotees at various locations during Shobha Yatra, especially at Tank Bund, Necklace Road, NTR Marg, Basheerbagh, and use of flowers, leaves and other decorative things by Ganesh pandal organisers. 194 Ganesh action teams deployed by GHMC worked hard for day and night to successfully clear the trash.

City Mayor Bonthu Rammohan congratulated 11,000 sanitation and entomology staff who worked hard to keep the Shobha Yatra route clean. Due to efficient coordination among officials and staff, very few complaints were received to Dial 100, My GHMC app and GHMC call centres, he said.

Bleaching power was sprayed in the areas such as Tank Bund, NTR Marg, Necklace road to prevent foul smell. Mayor also congratulated GHMC enforcement department for excellent services provided during the Shobha yatra. Enforcement department has done barricading at immersion points to ensure the safety of those involved in immersion and use of special boats for saving people during immersion.

55,000 idols immersed

The Mayor informed that more than 55,000 idols were immersed at 35 different locations including Hussain Sagar. Coordination among various departments ensured that the program was conducted successfully without any hitches, mayor said. He expressed his special thanks to all the GHMC employees, right from sanitation workers to higher officials, in making program successful.

Most idols immersed in artificial ponds

GHMC Commissioner Lokesh Kumar said that GHMC has ensured that the immersions do not pollute water tanks in the city. As many as 23 artificial immersion ponds were specially constructed in the city for the purpose and most of the idols in the city were immersed in those ponds, he said.

Most of the idols were immersed in ponds constructed at Neknapur tank, Durgam Cheruvu, Malkam cheruvu, Pathikunta Cheruvu at Rajendranagar, Rangadhamuni cheruvu at Kukatpally and Lingam Cheruvu in Qutbullapur, he said. The ponds would be used for immersions during Bathukamma festival and other festivals as well, he said.
