Hyderabad: A special drive to collect scrap and disposable items from the citizens was initiated by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Sunday. The drive will be continued till November 12. As per the instructions of the MA&UD Minister, K Taraka Rama Rao, GHMC has made all necessary arrangements to the sanitation drive.

The purpose of this programme is to prevent dumping of waste material in nalas and drains, which is the main cause for clogging the channels. Removal of wastes from choked nalas and stagnant water in low-lying areas during rains has become a challenge to the GHMC officials.

This special drive would ensure that the scrap material and disposal items like broken chairs, tables, mattresses, cots and other condemned articles do not end up in drains.

The drive is intended not only to collect the disposable articles and condemned materials from the household but also to sensitise people that such practices should be stopped forthwith to prevent inconvenience and other serious implications in the rainy season.

For this special drive, GHMC is involving voluntary organisations, Residential Welfare Societies, Self Help Groups who can facilitate collection of these items from the public. Wide publicity of the special drive would be taken up through public announcements, beat of drums and through local representatives as well as sanitation staff.

In this regard, Commissioner DS Lokesh Kumar instructed the Zonal Commissioners to personally monitor and submit report on daily basis, as the Minister desired to assess the performance of this programme after completion of the special drive. Further, Lokesh Kumar appealed all the citizens to hand over waste material and help the GHMC in keeping the city clean.
