Update: 2019-07-18 03:46 IST

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has embarked on a swachh drive to make city clean and green. After the distribution of twin bins to households, the civic body has started distributing a bin each to a street vendor. In the first phase, 5,000 bins have been distributed.

Senior officials said that the effort was already yielding positive results as vendors have started using the bins and there was a marked difference in the surroundings. They are no longer leaving garbage on roadside.

Normally, the shop keepers leave the garbage on the road at night before shutting. Food stall owners used to leave the organic waste which would pile up.

There are around 30,000 small vendors in the city. All small and street vendors used to dump the garbage on the road and pavements near their establishments every day disrupting the cleanliness drive.

The officials visited several areas in the city on Wednesday to check whether the vendors were using the bins. Even owners of the big business establishments kept the dust bins near their establishments, said GHMC officials. We would serve notices to those who do not comply, say officials.

From next Monday onwards, the GHMC would lift the garbage in the evening also and 4 vehicles and bob cots would be allotted in this regard, said the Commissioner.
