Alwal: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to establish twelve colony parks under Haritha Haram programme at Alwal circle. As last year, 29 parks were developed in the various colonies in Alwal circle under this program.

The GHMC has identified vacant lands in the residential colonies in Alwal zone, including Venugopal Nagar park - Alwal, Sundaram Colony park - Bolarum, Surabhi Enclave park - Kowkur, Prashant Vihar Colony park – Old Alwal, Green Vihar park– Old Alwal, Dew Drops park – Macha Bolaram, Kamaya park - Alwal, BHEL Colony park - Old Alwal, Retreat Colony park- West Venkatapuram, Green Avenue park, Kamla colony park, Alwal and Mangapuram park- Bolaram.

"The open lands which are now being developed as parks were in very bad condition. We identified those plots and started developing them into the parks under Haritha Haram program and the lands are around 2 to 3 acres," says Bhaskar Yadav, assistance manager at Urban Biodiversity Wing in Alwal circle.

Yadav further said these parks are simple parks, which will have various medicinal plants, flowering plants, butterfly weed plants, palm plants, shrubs, money plant and many more.

Just like in the 29 colony parks earlier, wherein we have planted around 30 to 35 varieties of plants, they are also planning to plant around 40 varieties of plants in these 12 parks. The parks will have several facilities, including pathways, sitting benches, drinking water facilities and lawns.

The estimated budget is around Rs 6 lakh for each park and the works are estimated to be completed by the end of August. "We have planned to dig compost pits in five major parks to produce own manure by using vegetable waste and that manure we can use as fertilizers in the parks," says Bhaskar.
