Maruti Nagar: The mass production of coconuts during this monsoon has led to the decrease of the price. However, the fall in coconut prices has affected the vendors.

A coconut, which was being sold for an amount of Rs 35-40 in the first week of July, is now being sold at Rs 15-25 depending on the size, a drop of nearly Rs 10. Moreover, prices are expected to drop further.

Sri Siddhi Vinayaka coconut wholesaler Shekhar G said, "The prices keep fluctuating based on the seasons. The price in which we sell coconut is for Rs 10-15. The retailers sell them till 25-30. Due to the monsoon, the production of the coconut has been more this year and to sell these coconuts we had to decrease the price of the coconut."

Anticipating high demand of the coconut, Aravind R, Sri Ayyapa Pooja Stores, said, "Due to the festive season going on there is a huge demand for coconut. The price of coconut increases especially in the festive season. This time we have bought a huge stock of coconut and to sell the coconut, even in the festive season we have to decrease the price of the coconut."

Anandimayi Nair, 42, a resident of Sainikpuri said, "One ingredient that remains a constant in the majority of delicacies is coconut. Let it be a vegetarian cuisine or a non-vegetarian cuisine. However, the decrease in the price of the coconut is not as effective because if you go to buy a coconut for Rs 15, the size is very small. A proper size of the coconut sufficient for making our cuisines sells at Rs 25-30. The price, however, differs from shop to shop."
