High glucose levels lead to serious diseases
Nampally: An awareness programme was conducted on "World Diabetes Day" with theme 'Family and Diabetes' at Care Hospitals in Nampally on Friday.
On this occasion, Medical Superintendent Dr Sushma Rani said people with diabetes have an increased risk of developing a number of serious health problems. Consistently high blood glucose levels can lead to serious diseases affecting the heart and blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, nerves and teeth. In addition, people with diabetes also have a higher risk of developing infections. In almost all high-income countries, diabetes is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease, blindness, kidney failure, and lower limb amputation.
Dr K D Modi Consultant Endocrinologist said, a healthy breakfast should help blood sugar levels from getting too high and should keep you full throughout the morning. Whilst cereal and toast may be cheap, these options typically raise blood sugar levels rapidly and may leave you hungry again before lunch.
Dr Govardhan Consultant Gen-Med said pick activities you enjoy. Think of physical activities that you like to do and can stick with over time. You don't need to spend money on special equipment or join a fancy health club. Just get out and walk.
Dr Geeta Consultant Endocrinologist said a diabetes diet should be high on fibre, must contain milk without cream, buttermilk, fresh seasonal fruits, green vegetables, etc. but remember to consume these components in moderation.
