Hyderabad: BSc (Hons) Computer Science prog to be introduced in 22 colleges

Hyderabad: Students who failed to get admission in B Tech computer science course need not to worry to make a career in the field. The State government has introduced an alternative to the much in demand B Tech Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) programme for students. On the lines of the course, a new BSc (Hons) Computer Science programme is being introduced in degree colleges from the forthcoming academic year.

The new programme comes with an option to exit after the third year. Officials said a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science certificate will be awarded to students on completion of the four-year programme.

Students who exit the programme after a successful third year, will get a basic BSc in Computer Science certificate. The fee for the new programme will be much less than that for regular B Tech CSC programme.

Officials said the new course will be offered by 11 government degree colleges and 11 select private colleges in the State. Each government colleges will have 60 seats; admissions will be given via Degree Online Services Telangana (DOST). Currently more than 70 per cent students are opting for BSc Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science combination in government colleges.

Now they will have option to pursue pure computer science degree course. The IT industry is looking for students with BSc (Hons) in CS with deep computer science knowledge. The curriculum will be prepared and designed in consultation with eminent faculty of the State universities and professionals from top IT companies. The syllabus will be finalised to meet the industries requirements.

The students will have the option to undergo two-three months of internships in IT companies to get hands-on training. The Telangana State Council of Higher Education and State Universities are also planning to introduce skill development courses like BBA Retailing or Logistics, BSc in Hospital Management, BA creative writing, entertainment from next academic year. The admissions will be given through DOST.
