Hyderabad City could be home to smallest mosque

Old City: The quest for the world's smallest historical mosque would probably end in Hyderabad, after one of the smallest mosques has started gaining a little limelight in the city. Hyderabad is well-known for its historical and heritage monuments, and now, will also be known as the place where the world's smallest historical mosque exists, say experts.

Popularly known as Jinn Masjid, the mosque is situated in Kishan Bagh. The mosque is said to have a space to merely accommodate around 12 people to offer prayers and is situated at the hill top of Mir Mehmood Ki Pahadi. Perched on a hill, beside Mir Alam Tank, beholding scenic beauty and the Sufi culture can be traced at the Dargah.

The managing trustee of Deccan Heritage says that the mosque has been abandoned and neglected by the people, because of which it has not gained enough recognition. It is situated very close to Syed Shah Mir Mehmood Dargah and can be treated as as a part of it. The mosque is located on the hill top of a steep height and is less visited by the people and lesser known.

The area of the mosque is just 10 square meters, which makes it the smallest mosque, competing with the currently known smallest mosque of Bhopal (16 square meters) and is said to be built nearly 400 years ago in the Qutb Shahi period.

A group of members, keen to protect the history, has taken up an initiative to bring recognition to the miniature structure. In this view, a heritage walk is being organised on the evening of April 24, which will help give this mosque a title of 'World's Smallest Historical Masjid'. The walk will be led by Dr Haseeb Jafferi, a profound knowledge holder of Hyderabadi history and Sufi culture.
