Serlingampally: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is raking in money in form of penalties for sanitation violations. A surprising revelation is that the IT corridor is still at the first place in paying penalties.

In the IT zone, the amount that was collected over a period of six months could be collected in just a month due to GHMC special drive in Serlingampally Circle covering Kondapur, Gachibowli, Nanakramguda, Madhapur and Lingampally. In October alone, GHMC collected Rs 20.98 lakh, and the penalties totaled Rs 27.5 lakh during the period from April to September.

The GHMC penalties for littering, dumping of waste in nalas, lack of sanitation etc touched Rs 2.5 crore across the city in last six months. About 256 violators paid Rs 50 lakh last month in the IT corridor.

So far 11,019 individuals and organisations were slapped with fines totaling Rs 2 crore in the city. Of this, Rs 57 lakh was collected from 691 violators in the Chandanagar circle, and Rs 12.4 lakh from 783 violators in Khairatabad circle. Serilingampally circle collected Rs 39.6 lakh in penalties from 454 violators.

Ramachandrapuram, Patancheru, Malkajgiri and Yousufguda remained at the bottom, which means they are better off on the sanitation front, compared to other parts of the city.
