Malakpet: AIMIM to distribute onions for 30 a kg
Malakpet: Even as the Rythu Bazars under State government scheme started giving onion under subsidy rate of Rs 40, as part of its welfare activities and generating goodwill amongst the masses, the AIMIM in Old City decided to give it for Rs 30.
Due to high prevailing rates of onion which touched Rs 200 kg recently, AIMIM took a new initiative and started selling the onion in subsidy by bringing down the price to Rs 30 per kg at first of its kind counter set up at Mutton Market in Malakpet on Friday. A huge gathering was seen for purchasing onion at low price for only Rs 30 per kg.
According to local leaders, they started this activity following instructions of Malakpet MLA Ahmed Bin Abdullah Balala. The party leader Mohammed Saifuddin Shafi (who represents Old Malakpet division Corporator Juweria Fatima) arranged the sale of onions in subsidised rate and was seen taking active part along with the partymen.
Owing to the close proximity to the Malakpet Gunj known for wholesale market of the onions and some other essentials, the leaders found this as an opportunity to help the women in their neighbourhood. If this activity proves to be successful the AIMIM will be starting similar counters in other constituencies.
According to a Grade-3 official Narendar, on Thursday around 8,103 quintals of onion reached to Malakpet market. There was decrease in the area cultivating onion by 40 per cent this year and also the untimely rains damaged the standing, crops which sparked spiraling of onion prices across the state.
The good quality onion is being sold at Rs 70 per kg, normal quality at Rs 50 per kg and the low quality at Rs 25 per kg by the self-help groups. State government started the scheme on November 28 for selling onion on subsidy rate for Rs 40 per kg, by showing their Aadhaar card.
