Man drives wife to suicide, gets 7-yr RI

LB Nagar: The II ASJ Court here on Tuesday sentenced one Shaik Muzahid (27) to seven-year rigorous imprisonment and imposed fine of Rs 5,000 for harassing his wife for additional dowry.

As a result, she committed suicide. According to police, on April 19, 2014, complainant Apsar Begum (43), the mother of victim, lodged a complaint with Maheswaram police station in which she stated that her second daughter Afsar Zabeen (20) marriage was solemnised with accused Shaik Muzahid (27).

At the time of marriage they gave Rs 2 lakh net cash, 10.5 tolas of gold, 45 tolas of silver, one Honda Shine motorcycle and other marriage articles as dowry. After a few days of marriage, Shaik Mujahid and his parents Shaik Juleka and Shaik Mahamood started harassing her daughter mentally and physically for additional dowry.

Also Shaik Muzahid was allegedly having extra marital relations with a woman and the same was observed by the Afsar. But he continued the illegal contact and he also addicted to alcohol and frequently used to beat Afsar. On April 19, 2014, her daughter called her on phone and disconnected abruptly and on the same day she committed suicide by hanging due to harassment for additional dowry by her in-laws.
