Hyderabad: There is good news for metro rail commuters. Fresh vegetables would soon be available at metro stations. Lakshmibai, the Director of Mana Kuragayalu Project, says that a formal approval from the Hyderabad Metro Rail has come about and soon commuters would be able to pick up veggies.

It may be noted that 'Mana Ooru Mana Kuragayulu' programme was launched under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana in 2014. There are close to 1,500 farmers benefitting from the project. In all, there are seven collection centers in Telangana and 61 outlets in the twin cities.

Lakshmibai says, "Under this project, it is a direct market facility to the consumers. Farmers who are not willing to come to Rythu Bazaar are selling produce to the Manakuragayalu team at collection centers and we are serving the communities in need and crediting money to farmers' accounts online."

"Following greater demand from the communities, we are supplying the farmers produce directly to the gated communities and some colonies twice or thrice in a week," informed officials.

So far, transactions worth Rs 21 crore took place and the amount was directly credited to the farmer's account from 24 collection centers. In total, 1,200 to 1,500 farmers are benefitted under this scheme. V K Mohan, a lawyer, said, "The vegetables are fresh and I have stopped going to Rythu Bazaar." The happiness of buying a fresh leafy vegetables cannot match anything," says Santhosh Kumar, another consumer.
