Meet on Fact Checking commences at Osmania University
Hyderabad: With a view to empowering students to deal with the surfeit of fake news in mainstream and social media, the Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Osmania University, is organising a four-day workshop on 'Fact Checking and Verification' which commenced here on Monday at the department.
Geetika Rustagi, a Google News Labs Teaching fellow, briefed the students about the tools required for a fact-checker, and also showed case studies of misinformation.
Rustagi drew a distinction between text, image and video misinformation and shared tips and hacks on a smart search. She also informed students as to how the search engine and its branches can be useful when it comes to unraveling the truth behind viral incidents.
R Sai Meghana, a student, stated that the session was very informative and pointed out that it was a good opportunity facilitated by the department. Over 25 students from the first year of MA attended the first day's session. The second session to be held on November 26 will focus on 'Data Journalism and Data Visualisation.
