Hyderabad: Governor Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan inaugurated the 7th Annual Conference of the Breast Imaging Society of India, BISICON 2019 here on Friday. The three-day international convention is being attended by about 500 radiologists, who sub-specialise in breast imaging, from across India and other SAARC nations.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Soundararajan called for enhanced awareness on ailments of Indian women. "Breast cancer has become the commonest cancer among women. Unfortunately, our health care system due to its limited resources is not able to grapple with this explosion.

In addition, the presentation of breast cancer in Indian women is variegated, as India is an amalgam of different cultures, dietary habits and lifestyles. Differing standards of breast imaging and reporting compound this problem; and a convention like BISICON 2019 helps in bringing the best knowledge in the field to address the emerging difficulties," she said.

Dr Laszlo Tabar, who has contributed significantly in the worldwide fight against breast cancer, was the main attraction at BISICON 2019. In a career spanning over 40 years, he has worked tirelessly to reduce or eliminate suffering and death from the disease. His pioneering research has laid the foundation for early detection through modern mammographic screening

Dr M Jwala Srikala, organising secretary, BISICON 2019, said, "BISICON 2019 will deal with important topics such as the growing trends of breast cancer among young women and the role of the latest technological advancements like breast tomosynthesis in its early diagnosis. Our aim is to ensure young Radiologists who intend to sub-specialize in breast imaging are provided hands-on training on mammography."
