Charminar: Telangana Human Rights Protection and Development Forum (THRP&DF), a voluntary organisation engaged in social service, has conducted so far 200 programmes of free food distribution at the state-run hospitals. Marking the World Food Day, which is being observed on October 16, the NGO distributed food at Government Nizamia General Hospital and completed its 202nd programme on Tuesday.

Speaking to The Hans India, Forum chairman, Md Ishrath Ali said that his team had been conducting this programme regularly at the State-run hospital near Charminar, where patients are distributed food at least once every week. Osmania General Hospital and Modern Government Maternity Hospital in Petlaburj are the two other hospitals.

"We make upma ourselves and it is served along with chutney amongst the patients. It costs around Rs 4,000 to 5,000, depending on transportation and variation in raw material prices. We raise money by way of contributions from our members. Around 400 to 500 people are served breakfast in at least two of these state-run hospitals," he said.

Helping children of rag-pickers, too

Recently on the occasion of 150th Gandhi Jayanthi, the volunteers of THRP&DF distributed books and stationery amongst the homeless families staying in Dabeerpura, who are engaged in rag picking and have been staying there for over a decade.

"Since the families remain destitute and homeless we decided to celebrate the occasion along with them by distributing sweets and also some books and stationery items, as their children are enrolled in local government schools. On International Peace Day, which also marked our 4th anniversary of the Forum amongst children from two orphanages one in Dhoodhbowli and Falaknuma, we distributed about 50 kits of stationery," he recalled.

Earlier in beginning of September, the THRP&DF expanded its social activities beyond the city ambit. As part of this endeavor, it appointed two new office-bearers for Rajendranagar constituency to serve the needy in distress.
