Night shelters in hyderabad city to be readied for homeless

Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) decided to provide shelter for the homeless in the city. They took a decision to arrange night shelters in full scale with winter knocking at the city doors.

GHMC Commissioner DS Lokesh Kumar instructed Zonal Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners to check the night shelters and asked them to provide necessary amenities, through a video conference on Wednesday. Additional Commissioners Hari Chandana Dasari, Siktha Patnaik and medical officers also participated in the conference.

Lokesh Kumar said, "There are 15 night shelters located across the twin cities. In which, around 600 homeless could be accommodated and if necessary, GHMC community halls could also be used if the existing are filled up." He instructed officials to take help of police personnel to prevent beggars and destitute people sleeping on footpath and main junctions.

Further, he said, "Empty land should be recognised in every ward to dump construction and debris. Fogging machines are attached to 60 vehicles, these vehicles should travel 9,000 km and do fogging. In addition to these, 30 mini fogging machines are also available, which also should be used in colonies, bastis and highly populated localities. He informed the officials be prepared for 2021 census process which is going to be started soon and also to speed up property tax collection for current financial year.
