Only a small no. of snakes venomous

Bahadurpura: The Nehru Zoological Park on Tuesday celebrated the World Snakes Day by conducting awareness programme on the weird creature that brings goosebumps amongst people. On this occasion, an awareness programme was conducted at the amphi theatre area opposite to the reptile world.

Swetha, a reptile expert, explained the role of reptiles in biodiversity and facts about the reptiles. "Only 375 of the 3,000 known species of snakes are venomous. Snakes can consume prey three times larger than the diameter of their head. Venomous snakes inject their prey with venom while constrictors squeeze their prey.

Anacondas and pythons can survive for months without food after feeding. No snakes are found in Antarctica, Iceland, Ireland, Greenland and New Zealand. The Inland (or Western) Taipan has a snake with the world's most poisonous venom. Moulting or shedding of the skin, takes place 2 to 4 times a year," she informed.
