Pig menace keeps people on the edge

Trimulgherry: The residents of Malani enclave, Indian Airlines Colony, Trimulgherry, urged the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) to take effective measures to contain pig menace in the locality.

They said that the pigs were roaming free in large numbers, especially during the late evening hours, and even block the movement of vehicles. N Venkata Ramana, a resident of Malani Enclave, said, "The pig population has multiplied in the last three months.

This is due to dumping of garbage and sewage into Trimulgherry lake and in vacant plots. Since garbage along with trash including plastic covers comes along with sewage and gets piled up near Trimulgherry Lake, the pigs are lured to these piles. A few pig rearers in Lalbazar let loose their pigs to graze at streets and stray dogs worsen the problem."

Repeated representations to the authorities of SCB and the elected representatives have gone in vain. Residents fear that viral fevers were likely to increase if the pig menace was not controlled.

"We are worried that these pigs could be the carriers of many diseases and infections. Our proximity to a pack of pigs makes us vulnerable to viral fevers. In the evenings, children play at the nearby park and in the streets and they are the worst-affected," said Bala Chouri, General Secretary of Malani Enclave.
