Pioneering designs on display at Hyderabad Design Week
Hyderabad: Day 3 of Hyderabad Design Week (HDW) kicked off at HICC, featuring various installations for the visitors. Eminent speakers such as Time Kobe, Pratap Bose, Jane Withers, Cristiano Ceccato, Emma Greer, Marcus Fairs, Priyanaka Khanna, Shiva Nallaperumal, Sandeep Sangaru, Rakesh Jetti, Ruchika Sachdeva, Jayanthi Reddy, Henry Skupniewicz addressed different topics under 'Humanising Design', the theme of Hyderabad Design Week.
Jayesh Ranjan, Principal Secretary, Industries & Commerce Dept, spoke of how the opportunities to host Hyderabad Design Week and the 31st World Design Assembly (for the first time in India) stood as milestones for the government and the city of Hyderabad itself. Thanking the team at the government of Telangana and the HDW partner team at India Design Forum (IDF), he said that in future the city may continue to host many such events for years to come.
Marcus Fairs, the founder and editor-in-chief of the world's most influential architecture, design and interiors magazine, Dezeen, spoke of 'Good Design In A Bad World'. He spoke of how design can essentially be a pioneer of change for a better future and of how simple it can be to implement design as such. He also said that since India is the third largest content consumer of Dezeen, he is looking forward to taking up projects in India.
Tim Kobe, the Founder of Eight Inc. spoke about strategic approach of how design, business and innovation intersect to create meaningful human experiences and why it matters.
Ruchika Sachdeva, Creative Director of Bodice, spoke about the alarming environment impacts of fashion industry and the increasing levels of textile waste. She also said that India being the second largest exporter of textiles in the world, it has the power to create the new culture of sustainable fashion.
Shiva Nallaperumal, founder of November, addressed about the challenges of western-facing design context, what it means to work with fonts for both Indian and major world scripts and how to celebrate these vernacular typographies.
Jane Withers of Jane Withers studio in a panel discussion with Abhishek Nath, Anupama Kundoo Architects and Kalpana Ramesh moderated by the British Council explored and discussed about the future of ecological sanitation and introduced the Loo Café x Water Loop concept and the team behind it. Jayanthi Reddy, founder and designer at Jayanthi Reddy Label, spoke about how she had been working towards being a sustainable apparel brand and her collaboration with weavers at Banaras. Pete Draper, CEO and Co-Founder of Makuta Visual Effects, spoke of his experience making Baahubali & the power of VFX.
The exhibits and installations that were displayed at the HICC were Loo Café x Waterloop, Via by Beatice De Fays, HDW Design Challenges, Unlearn Exhibit, Hyderabad Story of Design by Hyderabad Urban Labs, Inquilab Innovation Cycles, Young Designers Showcase by IIT, NIFT, Hamstech and JNAFAU, India Design Show by CII, Be there by Taiwan Design Centre. Various other installations around the city were Pochampally Ikkat , VR Qutub Shahi Tombs, VR 360 Degree Experience at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, WeaveX by DesignAware at Khairtabad, Flock crowdsourced installation at IKEA and St+art Installation by Daku at Hussain Sagar.
The second and final day of the Hyderabad Design Week Conference will be inaugurated by K T Rama Rao - Minister Industries and Commerce Department, at HICC on October 11 at 9.30 am.
