Pressing civic issues galore in IT corridor

Madhapur: Monsoon has brought fresh woes of its own along with showers. A little rainfall is enough to cause severe chaos, leading to disruption of normalcy. But, the situation seems to be more severe in the Madhapur area. Residents rue lack of attention by authorities and request the GHMC to resolve the issues as they are unable to bear the hardships caused by the negligence of the government.

Speaking about civic issues in Madhapur, a resident, Sama Swathi Reddy, said, "Madhapur is full of civic issues and the population also seems to lack civic sense. For the last 8 years, I have been residing in Madhapur and my lane which is quite behind the AMB mall has been awaiting a basic road for quite long.

I feel authorities bother only about the main roads but not internal roads." A continuous rainfall for two to three hours is enough to cause deluge and storm water inundates major arterial roads as there is no passage for rainwater to flow into the drains. If rain lashes the city continuously for two to three days, the normal life would go for a toss, she observed.

Traffic troubles

Whenever the city receives rainfall, massive traffic chaos is witnessed in Madhapur area. With rainwater getting stagnated on the road during peak hours, thousands of vehicles get stuck on roads for hours.

Several denizens of the area lament that the traffic jams are so bad, it takes more than three hours to ride just a 3-km stretch in the IT corridor and that the dangerously damaged roads are creating further hardships to the commuters.

"I have been working in Madhapur for more than 10 years and I travel 60 km daily. Madhapur roads are in pathetic state with poor maintenance and are riddled with potholes," criticised Lokeshwari, a techie who works there.

U-turns closed, but why?

"For more than a month, trudging traffic has been guzzling a lot of fuel as people have to drive more than 2km just to get U-turn to Madhapur. U-turns on the stretch of Madhapur-to-Hi-Tec City are completely closed and the only turn is available at Madhapur police station. There were no updates on closing the U-turns. Taking U-turn is wasting a lot of time for motorists and leading to unwanted traffic interruptions in return," criticised Venkatesh, a software engineer, IBM.

Where is Swachhtha?

"Swachh Hyderabad has no Swachhta when it rains. GHMC usually says the issue has been resolved, but in reality, I have raised an issue long ago regarding drainage overflow at DSR Prime near Durgam Cheruvu, NCC in Madhapur, and the issue is not resolved yet. If we cannot stop drain overflow, how can we achieve Swachh Hyderabad," said Roy, a resident of Madhapur.

Apart from these major issues, other issues like unattended piles of garbage, uncovered manholes, sparking power poles and inappropriately tied electric wires are add-on troubles in Madhapur.
