Abandoned quarries become death traps

Ranga Reddy: There are many abandoned quarries in the outskirts of Hyderabad in places like Shamshabad, Kothur, Himayath Sagar, Ibrahimpatnam and along the Outer Ring Road. The open pits at the quarries have become death traps for the people. These quarries are a huge threat to the people and so many innocent people have lost their lives at these quarries.

In the last six years, 21 people have lost their lives after drowning in these stony quarry pits.

Recently, two children have drowned in these pits in Mekaguda village. Several people have visited the abandoned quarry near Himayat sagar in order to swim in that water, but they were not aware of the depth of the quarry water and drowned. There are many legal and illegal stone quarries operating in the State and they are left open after finishing the work. These quarries have become death traps for the people.

The quarries are not only an environmental hazard but also a huge threat to the people. But the officials are neither taking any measures to stop the illegal mining nor preventing the people from visiting those abandoned and dangerous quarries. This negligence of officials has led to many accidents and mishaps at the quarries, as a result innocent people have lost their lives.
