Rangareddy: Government Junior College at Shadnagar wallows in utter neglect

Rangareddy : Years of officials’ blind eye towards providing essentially needed safety and sanitary measures and sufficient faculty in the Government Junior College, Shadnagar in Rangareddy district has turned the institution into a haunted house while lack of proper maintenance has further pushed it into a poignant state.

For sure, the only government-run institution in Shadnagar headquarters that was considered an academic treasure trove helping the local students pursue higher education for over 50 years has been left completely abandoned by successive governments and is gradually inching towards its extinction.

Established in the year 1970, this college has been serving the constituency for 53 years but now grappling with a slew of issues that include sanitation, supervision, and sustainability measures due to years of alleged official apathy.

Upon learning that the only government-run junior college is wallowing under a poignant state, the former MLA and Telugu Desam Party Politburo Pakkani Narsimhlu visited the institution on Tuesday and felt unhappy watching the messy state of affairs.

It is said that for a total number of 772 male and female students – 408 in the first year and 364 in the second year, only 19 faculty members are serving in the college in addition to the four non-teaching staff.

Cherry on the top is that the College Principal M A Rauf was on deputation at the Board of Intermediate Hyderabad from 2021. The college has MPC, BiPC, HEC, and CEC sections for Telugu medium students while only the HEC stream is available for Urdu medium students. Apart from this, there are computer science, sericulture, E and CT, and MPHW training sections available as vocational courses.

Lashing out at the officials’ apathy in safeguarding the only government-run junior college in the Shadnagar headquarters, Pakkani Narsimhlu said, “No sanitary arrangements and lack of safety measures visibly appeared around the premises and different classrooms and sections inside the institution paint a weird picture of the college. The discolored walls with unwanted shrubs peeping from the cracks speak in volumes about the sheer laxity in maintaining intuition.”

“While some of the classrooms are found lacking a proper floor in the college, the institution is completely starved of proper drinking water facilities for the students and staff,” he said.

The only water plant available in the college was found defaced due to poor maintenance that posed a great risk to the health of the students. The electricity wiring appeared poorly fitted and saw frequent incidents of short circuits. It is also learned that the in-charge principal Qudsia Begum took up repair works on her own on different occasions.

During the visit, the students complained about snakes emerging from the bushes and roaming in the premises but their concerns always reached deaf ears. For such a big college, they said, not a single attendant was available to ensure safety and sanitation. It is learned that many students have already left the college after procuring transfer certificates due to the messy state of affairs prevailing in the institution.
