Restoring past glory

Currently in possession of the Osmania University and adorning the role of the Osmania University College for Women, the British Residency in Hyderabad is central to William Dalrymple's classic story ('White Mughals') of Resident James Achilles Kirkpatrick's romance with the Hyderabadi noblewoman Khair-un-nissa. And forming an integral part of the Residency complex is the British Cemetery.

Comprising of more than 40 graves dating from 1807 to 1916, including those of four important Residents who passed while in office, the Cemetery was overgrown with vegetation and most of its graves and boundary walls severely dilapidated until 2016.

In association with the British Association for Cemeteries in South Asia (BACSA) and the Department of Heritage, Government of Telangana, the DHF is in the process of restoring the Cemetery. Phase 3 of the restoration is in progress currently.
