Rise in girl child sex ratio in hyderabad city

Hyderabad: As per the recent data from the Women Development and Child Welfare Department (WD&CW), there is a rise in girl child sex ratio compared to the data of 2018.

From 870 girls for every 1,000 boys in 2018 to 934 girls for every 1,000 boys this year in Hyderabad, the girl child sex ratio has gone up. K Neelima, extension officer, WD&CW Hyderabad, said, "The target of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) theme is to protect the girl child and improve the child sex ratio of the city. As per the famous quotation 'unity is strength', any programme will be successful by innovative initiatives and that too from the grassroot level."

Supervisors and Anganwadi teachers from WD&CW Department, ANMs and Asha from Health department, CRPs and DY IoS from the education department and SLFs / TLFs from GHMC, Hyderabad were motivated to work for the girl child protection in Hyderabad district.

The campaign was started in 2015 and so far, 182 government schools across Hyderabad district under BBBP campaign are enrolled. "Every third Saturday, the department in coordination with an NGO celebrates 'Swaraksha Day' which is a community-based prevention programme.

This empowers young and vulnerable girls with the knowledge of tactics used by traffickers, so that they could protect themselves from being trafficked," added Neelima.

Other initiatives taken up by WD & CW department in government schools are Sukanya Samridhi Yojna, POCSO Act and Beti Jagruti to increase awareness on celebrating the birth of the girl child and enabling her education. These special initiatives aim at ensuring that girls are born, nurtured and educated without discrimination to become empowered citizens of this country with equal rights as part of the campaign.
