Several trees get uprooted in Alwal
Alwal: A strong thunderstorm accompanied by rain hit the twin city on Tuesday evening. Though it bought a great relief, it caused devastation in the city by uprooting several trees and bringing down electric poles, plunging the city into darkness, especially in Alwal circle.
As many as 25 trees were uprooted in Temple Alwal, Old Alwal, Kanajiguda, Sai Nagar, Perm, Nagar, Vasavi colony Brindavan Colony, Maccah Bolarum, and Venkatapuram. The Alwal circle received a rainfall of 39.5 mm.
Immediate action was taken by the rescue team of GHMC Alwal and around 15 workmen and one JBC were deployed to carry out the rescue services in the affected areas and the work went on till 3 am on Wednesday. Many low-lying areas were seen inundated with rainwater, especially in Old Alwal road.
The power supply was deliberately cut off by the department in some areas to avert any accidents due to strong winds, says B Maheshwar, Executive Engineer, GHMC Alwal, Circle 16, ward no 132.
The power supply was disrupted in most parts of Alwal, especially Bolarum and Venkatapuram. Due to the sudden fall of the tree branches on electric wires, electric poles got damaged, said B Maheshwar. However, the power supply was restored in a couple of hours.
He further said that almost all the felled trees were removed by the rescue teams. A huge tree fell at Alwal Junction and it was removed by the team. On Wednesday, GHMC officials inspected the affected areas in, including the poles and electric wires, and assured to repair and to solve the issue by Wednesday evening.
