Spike in heatstroke cases in city hospitals
Hyderabad: As the rise in mercury levels is higher in the city, more than 10 cases of heatstroke are reported in the government hospitals every day and in the private hospitals 5-6 cases reported daily. According to the researchers, if the temperature is above 37° Celsius, then they are chances of heatstroke.
Dr Navodaya Gilla, Consultant General Medicine, Care Hospital said we are receiving 4-5 heatstroke cases daily. Most of the cases are not critical in nature and usually have dehydration, headache, and high-grade fever. Depending on the condition of individual patients, paracetamol and IV fluids are used for the treatment.
Fever, diarrhea or vomiting, overexposure to the sun and not drinking enough water are symptoms that can result in heatstroke. Afternoon time is the crucial period when most heatstroke occurs.
With the increase in temperatures, the chances of heat stroke related-illnesses are likely to increase in coming days and once should take care by drinking enough water to avoid dehydration.
Treatment of Heatstroke
ORS should be given to patients who are suffering from heatstroke to balance the electorate in the body.
To bring the body temperature normal, an ice pack can be given.
Patients should be kept in the clod place and where there are no direct rays of the sun.
Whenever a person is suffering from heatstroke, professional medical help must taken.
Symptoms of Heat Stroke
- Throbbing headache.
- Dizziness and light-headedness.
- Lack of sweating despite the heat.
- Red, hot, and dry skin.
- Muscle weakness or cramps.
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Rapid heartbeat, which may be either strong or weak.
- Rapid, shallow breathing.
Precautions
- Wear light color cotton dress and avoid dark colors
- Drink penalty of water and always carry water bottle whenever you are travelling
- Take extra care during afternoon time, stays indoors
