Thundershowers, gusty winds forecast
Hyderabad: The city witnessed moderate rainfall on Thursday night resulting in trees getting uprooted, water logging in several areas and power outages. Low lying areas in and around Mehdipatnam were affected.
Several trees were uprooted at Navodaya Colony of Mehdipatnam and also at road no 10 Banjara Hills. The Disaster Management teams swung into action clearing the uprooted trees.
Vishwajit, Director of Enforcement, Vigilance and Disaster Management, GHMC said that EV and DM teams commenced operations to clear uprooted trees and water logging across Hyderabad. Many areas also reported power cut for hours following unseasonal rains that hit the city on Thursday night. A few areas like Narayanaguda (55.3 mm), Khairtabad (49.5 mm), Srinagar Colony (30.8 mm), Asifnagar (29.8 mm) received rains.
Roads in the city were water logged, throwing life out of gear. The Some areas also suffered from power outage. GHMC wings struggled to restore power services and traffic at various points in the city.
These rain activities have a distinct pre-monsoon feature to them as these commenced during late afternoon and evening hours and were accompanied by strong winds, say Met officials.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, made a forecast that light to moderate rains or thunder showers are likely to occur at isolated places over Hyderabad for also the next four days. Thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds from 40 to 50 kmph and lightning very likely to occur at isolated places of Hyderabad.
IMD, Hyderabad, predicted active western disturbance affected Western Himalayan region and the adjoining plains of northwest India during the second-half of the week and intense rainfall activity along with isolated thunder squalls and hail storms over the region.
Raja Rao, Meteorologist at IMD Hyderabad, further informs: "The cyclonic circulation extending up to 1.5 km above mean sea level over south Chhattisgarh and neighbourhood now lies over Chhattisgarh and adjoining areas of Vidarbha and Telangana and extends up to 0.9 km above mean sea level.
The trough at 1.5 km above mean sea level runs from Chhattisgarh to Coastal Karnataka across east Vidarbha, Telangana and interior Karnataka. The trough of low at mean sea level over Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining central parts of south Bay of Bengal persists. The trough/wind discontinuity from Marathwada to Comorin area across Interior Karnataka and interior Tamil Nadu at 0.9 km above mean sea level has become less marked."
Due to this, it is expected that Telangana will continue to see pre-monsoon activities. Also, one or two intense spells are expected over parts of the Hyderabad in the coming days.
Though the sudden rains causing a tentative relief from the heat, at the same time, it has been causing damage, even uprooting of trees and water loggings across the city. Low-lying areas in the city are affected much during the unseasonal rains. Traffic jams are also witnessed even if it rains moderately.
