Traffic fines at record high in Cyberabad

Hyderabad: The Cyberabad traffic cops collected record fines totaling a whopping Rs 20.15 cr in the last three months (June-August) for the violation of traffic rules. Around 7, 21,268 cases were booked only in Cyberabad. "The figure reveals that people of Cyberabad are quite an undisciplined lot while driving on roads and even hefty fines and penalties are not acting as a deterrent.

Since time is more valuable than money for people, brief periods of strong punishments like detention (jail) or community services, as prevalent in some advanced countries, could teach them a lesson," said Srinivas, ACP, Gachibowli, Cyberabad Traffic police. The figure is much higher compared to the fines collected in the previous years and the credit goes to the 'e-challan' system implemented in a big way, he added.

"This technology, whereby an officer can simply issue an 'e-challan' from his mobile phone, has not only reduced corruption on the roads, but also resulted in a massive collection of fines for the government coffers," said traffic police personnel. "While there were 2, 46,420 cases in June, it came down to 1, 92,820 in August, and there will be a huge change yet to come. We will achieve violation-free Hyderabad in no time," says a traffic controller.
