Tirupati: One more medical college may soon add to the existing three in Chittoor district. In a bid to move towards starting Sri Balaji Medical College (SBMC) from next year, Hi-tech Medical College and Hospital, Bhubaneswar under the auspices of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam has been providing the required expertise for the super speciality hospital and will be launched on Wednesday. AP Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan will inaugurate the hospital wing of the project virtually.

It may be recalled that, in 2005, the government felt the need of setting up of a medical college attached to SVIMS with the financial support of TTD. Then chief minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy laid foundation stone for Padmavati Medical College and hospital in 150 acre near the airport. They also built some buildings there. Later, the college and hospital were set up in the vicinity of SVIMS only.

Subsequently, out of that land 60 acre was allotted to Kanchi mutt where they started out patient services in those buildings and made futile efforts to obtain MCI nod to start medical college. When some private institution started procedures for MCI nod, the government objected it and cancelled the allotment of 60 acre to the mutt.

Since then the entire project was stopped though nominal OP services are being continued. However, it was learnt that Kanchi Mutt continued legal battle and gets back the allotted 60 acre to it. Now, the mutt along with Sai Foundation of Chennai came forward to run the college and hospital.

Speaking to The Hans India, the Hi-tech group chairman Dr Tirupati Panigrahi said that they are only extending their support as they were well experienced in the field. Advanced equipment is made available at the hospital to extend super speciality services which will be made available for the poorer sections.

Srikalahasti MLA Biyyapu Madhusudana Reddy will participate in the inauguration function on Wednesday. He said that on the occasion of launching a new super speciality hospital, a three day free mega medical camp will be held there for the benefit of the people of the constituency.

Already, three medical colleges are there in Chittoor district. Government's SV Medical college and Sri Padmavati medical college for women run by SVIMS are in Tirupati while PES Medical College is in Kuppam. The government has recently sanctioned another medical college to be set up in Madanapalle.
