Knives prepared for supply in cockfights being seized in Gogulampadu village

Vijayawada: Defying the police orders on ban of cockfights and gambling during the Sankranti festival season, the enthusiast are orgainsing cockfights in some villages of the district.

Musunuru police on Sunday raided Gogulampadu village and arrested two persons and seized 129 knives used for cockfights and material used for making the knives. The punters and cockfight organisers use these sharp deadly knives and tie to the legs of the cocks. The hapless poor creatures indulge in the intense fight and die due to the deadly injuries inflicted by the knives.

Nandigama police raided a Nugallu village and detained 23 persons for organising the cockfights. On a tip off, the police raided the village and noticed that 23 persons were involved in the cockfights. The police seized Rs26,400 in cash, 13 two-wheeler vehicles and roosters.

Some persons were found to be busy in preparations for the cockfights and making the knives used in the cockfights.

Krishna district Superintendent of Police M Ravindranath Babu categorically made it clear that organising cockfights and betting is a crime and the police would take stern action on the culprits.

On the other hand, the Krishna district police are trying to encourage the youth in the rural areas to play traditional games and avoid participating the cockfights and gambling. The police are conducting volleyball, Kho Kho, kabaddi and other sports in the villages and asking the youth to actively participate in the sports and games.

A volleyball tournament was conducted by the district police at the Parade Grounds evoked huge response from the youth. Special Enforcement Bureau, Krishna district ASP Vakul Zindal attended as the chief guest. He congratulated the police and the local youth for participating in the tournament.

Bandar rural circle team emerged winner and Bandar town circle was the runner-up. Additional SP appealed to the youth to encourage the traditional games and sports. He said the government has banned the cockfights and gambling.
