Vijayawada: Home care employee attacks elderly woman, robs valuables

Vijayawada: Hanuman Junction police on Sunday arrested one person in connection with the attack on old woman and robbing of gold articles worth Rs 4 lakh from a house in Dantaguntla village of Bapulapadu mandal on Saturday evening. The police have formed three teams and successfully arrested the accused Samatam Harish, 21 and recovered the gold articles worth Rs 4 lakh and cash of Rs 7300 in less than 15 hours of the incident. The caretaker had attacked the elderly woman Kolli Vasumati and robbed the valuables.

Nuzvid DSP B Srinivasulu told the media that a worker of the Sri Vijaya Godavari home care services located in Madhura Nagar, Vijayawada, was involved in the offence. He said Kolli Lakshmaiah Chowdary, a resident of Dantaguntla village appointed a home caretaker for his elderly parents Kolli Venkatappaiah,70, and Kolli Vasumati, 65. Lakshmaiah Chowdary works in Hyderabad and Goa and his parents live at the native place Dantaguntla village.

The regular home taker Ch Venkat Kishore was on leave on December 12. He was working for the salary of Rs 16,000 per month. The management of the Sri Vijaya Godavari home care services deputed Samatam Harish to take care of the elderly couple. Harish has approached the Godavari home services only two days and asked for the work. Without verifying the background of Harish, the management has appointed Harish for the work and asked him to go to take care of elderly couple. But Harish has decided to steal the gold articles and cash from the residence. On December 12, about 4.30 pm, he opened the wardrobe to rob the gold articles. On hearing the noise, the elderly woman opened eyes and noticed he was stealing the cash and gold from the wardrobe. He immediately attacked on her head with iron rod to kill the old woman. The local residents noticed the attack and missing of gold from the home and informed to the police.

Hanuman Junction police suspected that the crime was committed by known person. Three teams were formed to nab the culprit. Accused Harish was apprehended in less than 15 hours. After committing the offence, he came to Vijayawada and tried to go back to his native place in Eluru.

Krishna district superintendent of police M Ravindranath Babu has congratulated the police for apprehending the culprit with 15 hours. He has appealed to the people to be cautious with the care taker agencies and workers. He also said the Sri Vijaya Godavari home care agency not enquired properly about the accused Harish. He said Harish has criminal background and has vices and approached the agency for the job.

SP praised the Hanuman Junction CI DV Ramana, SI Chantibabu, Veeravalli SI Basha, ASI Saibabu and other police personnel for arresting the accused in less than 15 hours.
