Visakhapatnam airport registers steady growth of passengers

Visakhapatnam: Despite the pandemic, Visakhapatnam airport registered lakhs of passengers in 2020.

From a registration of 7,300 passengers in the month of May, the airport steadily witnessed an apparent growth in the passengers' movement in subsequent months.

In December, the airport saw 1.61 lakh passengers arriving and departing to various destinations.

Compliance to safety precautions, contactless screening for ticketing, luggage-scanning and a hassle-free maintenance are some of the reasons for many travellers to prefer air travel from Visakhapatnam.

In June, 2020, 37,574 passengers arrived and departed from the airport. While 39,556 passengers travelled in scheduled flights in July, 59,701, the passenger footfall was 1.38 lakh in November.

From May to December last year, Visakhapatnam airport recorded the passenger footfall of 6.53 lakh.

Speaking to The Hans India, Airport Director M Raja Kishore says, "A number of passengers preferred air travel compared to other modes of transport, especially in times of the pandemic. Given the santisation measures considered and adherence to Covid-19 protocols, passengers find flying a much safer mode of travel."

Apart from the passenger traffic, the airport authorities have kept their focus on improving the existing infrastructure by creating an extra parking space, flight parking bays, sheds at VIP gates, among other facilities. Visakhapatnam airport is not only registering an impressive footfall over the months but also contributing to significant cargo volumes.

According top priority to safety aspects, the airport authorities are keen on making the airport a traveller-friendly one.
