Visakhapatnam: Dilapidated drains, uneven roads bother residents

Visakhapatnam: Cramped lanes at Pydimamba Colony near Butchirajupalem cause discomfort as roads that were dug up for pipeline works remained unevenly covered. According to the residents of the colony, sanitation takes a hit in the neighbourhood. Clogged and dilapidated drains continue to pose a problem for the people in the area.

Three main roads connect Pydimamba Colony. One passes via Gopalapatnam-NAD bypass road, the other via BRTS road, while the third one connects the gas go-down road. Of these, two roads continue to be busy most part of the day.

Since the colony roads connect main junctions, many motorists take these routes to access their destination. This is leading to increased noise pollution and traffic congestion. "Uneven roads are making things worse as commuters frequently end up skidding here. There is an urgent need to take up road repair works in the locality," says P Prakash, a resident of the colony.

The colony that has a history of over four decades requires attention as some of the drains are in a dilapidated condition. Residents say that they face mosquito menace in the area.

Pydimamba temple abuts the neighbourhood and people here celebrate annual festival 'jatara'. The festival draws people from various parts of the city. Though the annual festival is celebrated in a grand manner every year, the colony often takes a backseat in terms of development. "At least, drains need to be repaired in the locality as we suffer from mosquito-borne diseases," says Eshwar, another resident of the neighbourhood.
