Visakhapatnam: Marking 'International Day of Climate Action – 2021', Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) organised a unique competition for school and college level students.

Focussing on the theme 'regard before you discard – best out of waste competition', the event underlined the importance of recycling and reusing waste material.

Around 30 students from diffSterent categories took part in the contest which was followed by a seminar. Head of the Department of Environment, Andhra University, A J Solomon Raju shared insights into climate change and its effects on environment along with soil carbon storage, carbon-dioxide emissions, increased temperatures and changing precipitation patterns.

Prof Sunita from the Department of Meteorology and Oceanography, Andhra University, spoke about the consequences of climate change in India. More frequent and intense drought, storms, heat waves, rising sea levels, melting glaciers and warming oceans can directly harm animals, she added.

IGZP curator Nandani Salaria emphasised on the action to be taken collectively to address the issue at micro and macro levels.

The process of reduce, reuse and recycle starts with bringing down single use plastic or riding bicycles to work and minimising environmental footprint.

The seminar saw a participation of close to 65 students. In the end, a participation certificate was given to all the participants.
