Visakhapatnam: A retractable system with a seating capacity of 350 is soon going to be part of the contemporary sports arena which is getting readied at MVP Colony.

Work pertaining to the fully-equipped sports complex is gaining pace at MVP Colony near AS Raja College Grounds.

Developed by the Greater Visakhapatnam Smart City Corporation Limited (GVSCCL) at a cost of Rs 25 crore, the smart city project will include basketball, volleyball and badminton courts.

This apart, a swimming pool, a walking track and children's play area, among other amenities will dot the multi-storey building.

The arena with indoor and outdoor facilities is being developed in an area of 5,000 sq ft. "Currently, 70 per cent of the work has been completed. Rooftop is in progress and the project is inching towards completion. The target is to wrap up the smart city project by January next," says M Vinay Kumar, Superintendent of Engineer, Smart City Projects.

For those arriving from different destinations, the arena also provides accommodation facility.

At a time when Visakhapatnam is gaining popularity on all fronts, the full-fledged sports arena aims at boosting the sporting culture and facilitating multiple amenities at one stop to the sportspersons belonging to various disciplines. Besides Swarna Bharathi and Rajiv indoor stadiums at Pedagantyada, Visakhapatnam lags behind in housing a complete sports arena. The ensuing smart city project intends to plug the gap.
