Amidst Political Turmoil, Congress Picks Digvijay Singh For Rajya Sabha
Bhopal: Senior Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh reportedly filed his nomination on Thursday, for the Rajya Sabha from his home state. Earlier, there had been some speculation about Singh's Rajya Sabha candidature.
Digvijay Singh's nomination to the Rajya Sabha comes on the heels of Congress heavyweight from MP, JyotiradityaScindia quitting the party and joining the BJP on Wednesday. At the core of Scindia's grievances were reported efforts of the Kamal Nath-Digvijay Singh duo to deny him a Rajya Sabha seat.
The Congress is certain to secure one Rajya Sabha seat in the state. This proved to be the trigger for Scindia's exit as he was clearly being denied a berth in the Upper House.
It was only after JyotiradityaScindia decided to go incommunicado that both Digvijay Singh and Kamal Nath woke up to the reality of events in the state. At that point, both of them said that they had no objection to his Rajya Sabha candidature and were willing to sit down and thrash out the differences.
However, as events reveal, Jyotiraditya Scindia was too far gone by then and decided to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the company of Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Scindhia formally joined the BJP at the party headquarters in the presence of BJP president Jagat Prakash Nadda.
