Chief of Army Staff, General MM Naravane, welcomed the Supreme Court order giving Permanent Commission to women in the army. He asserted that it would give a roadmap for the army authorities to move forward in this issue.

The matter had been in courts for 10 years and the Centre had not acted on the Delhi High Court order. The apex court had rapped the Centre on the issue of permanent commission to women in the Army.

Earlier, the Supreme Court remarked that it did not wish to give a ruling the matter and hoped that the army and the government would find a way forward and come up with a solution.

Gen. Naravane also said that the Indian Army was all for gender parity and had always been championing gender equality, he said. He also said that the army would find the Supreme Court order enabling in this respect.

Lady officers in the army welcomed the Supreme Court verdict ordering the army to give them a permanent commission.

Referring to militancy in the Valley, the Army chief also said that there has been a downturn in the number of terrorist incidents in Jammu and Kashmir. Over the past few months, there have been fewer terrorist incidents, he pointed out. General Naravane said that there are 15-20 terrorist camps still operating in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK).
