CAA: Shaheen Bagh Protesters Plan March To Amit Shah's House Today

Update: 2020-02-16 09:09 IST

New Delhi: Anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) Protesters from Shaheen Bagh are scheduled to march towards Union Home Minister, Amit Shah's residence in the national capital at 2 PM on Sunday. The demonstrators claim they are responding to an open invitation by Amit Shah at a media event recently.

The Home Minister had stated that the government was willing to clear the doubts of protesters with regard to CAA. However, his call to the protesters had a rider—the Home Minister added that any discussions will take place only on merits.

Amit Shah had observed that the CAA only gave refuge and citizenship to minorities who faced religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. The Union Home Minister said that he was prepared to meet a delegation of demonstrators from anywhere and allay their fears.

Meanwhile, media reports quoted MHA sources as saying that there was no formal appointment from the Home Minister for Sunday afternoon. The Shaheen Bagh protesters however are determined to March to Amit Shah's residence.

Protesters have been demonstrating at Shaheen Bagh in the national capital against CAA for two months and have attracted a lot of media attention, as well. The Shaheen Bagh protest has acquired its fair share of controversy with the BJP making it the focus of its election campaign in the national capital in which the ruling party at the Centre managed to win only 8 seats.

The Delhi Police are taking all measures to ensure that no untoward incident takes place, media reports added.
