India COVID-19 Tally Climbs To 2,36,657

The coronavirus pandemic in the country saw a record single-day spike of close to 10,000 cases with 9,887 cases being reported on Friday. India's overall tally has now risen to 2,36,657 as per the Saturday morning update put out by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The countrywide death count has now climbed to 6,642.

India has now overtaken Italy to become the sixth worst affected state in the world by the coronavirus pandemic.

Across the country, there are active cases across the states, while people have been cured or discharged. These are the ten states recording the highest numbers of confirmed coronavirus cases in the country:

Urban centres have been driving the numbers across states as the COVID-19 crisis in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Ahmedabad reveal. These cities between them, contribute more than 60% of the caseload of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Maharashtra continues to report the highest number of cases with the state's COVID-19 tally now crossing the 80,000 mark. The state's overall count now stands at 80,229. The death count in the state has now reached 2,849.

Tamil Nadu has also been reporting rising numbers of confirmed coronavirus cases with the state tally now reaching 28,694. Tamil Nadu has reported 232 deaths so far.

Delhi has seen a surge in the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in recent days, with the total count in the national capital now crossing 26,334 cases. The Delhi death count stands at 708.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Gujarat now stands 19,094 with the death count mounting to 1,190.

Rajasthan's tally has now crossed the 10,000 mark climbing to 10,084 confirmed coronavirus patients with 218 deaths.

Uttar Pradesh has inched closed close to the 10,000 mark reaching 9,733 COVID-19 cases. The state has reported 257 deaths. Madhya Pradesh has reported 8,996 confirmed COVID-19 cases with a high mortality rate of 384 deaths.

West Bengal has so far reported 7,303 cases of coronavirus with 366 deaths. Bihar has so far recorded nearly 5000 cases with the COVID-19 tally in the state reaching 4,596 with 29 deaths, while Karnataka has reported 4,835 cases of COVID-19 with 57 deaths.
