Update: 2019-08-09 19:13 IST

New Delhi: The next party president to take the helm of the 134-year-old Congress party is likely to be Mukul Wasnik. According to reports, he emerged as the frontrunner in the party.

The decision on the Congress president will be declared tomorrow. Mukul Wasnik is a Dalit leader from Maharashtra. He is the second Dalit leader to helm the Congress party, Damodaram Sanjeevaiah being the first from Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh.

Wasnik is likely to be handed over the responsibility of the Congress party. According to sources, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) seems to have almost finalised his name.

The Congress Party has been in a bit of soup since its party president, Rahul Gandhi, resigned. Rahul insisted that the next president be outside of the Gandhi family.

Though senior Congress leaders like AK Antony, Ahmed Patel, KC Venugopal and Jyotiraditya Scindia have been named as the candidates for the next president, sources say that they weren't keen on the leadership position.

The CWC has expedited the process of choosing the president.
