Delhi Elections: AAP Questions EC On Delay In Announcing Voter Turn Out

Update: 2020-02-09 16:45 IST

New Delhi: The AamAadmi Party (AAP) criticised the Election Commission of India for delaying the official announcement relating to the percentage of the final voter turnout in the Delhi elections. Addressing the media on Sunday in the national capital, AAP Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh, pointed out that nearly 24 hours had elapsed since the voting for 70 assembly constituencies got over. The AAP leader demanded that the EC explain the delay in announcing the voter turnout percentage. Media and the whole of Delhi have been waiting eagerly for this official announcement, he said.

The AAP Rajya Sabha member said that there was something fishy in the whole matter. "Something is going on behind the scenes", he told the media. Sanjay Singh also recalled that after Lok Sabha elections had concluded the Election Commission had announced the voting percentage figures for all states within an hour. "Why is it that the EC is taking so long to announce the final figures when it comes to a small state like Delhi?", he asked.

Delhi chief Minister and AAP supremo, Arvind Kejriwal also described the delay on the part of EC as shocking. In a tweet Kejriwal wondered what the EC was doing. "Why are they not releasing poll turnout figures, several hours after polling?"

Polling for 70 constituencies in Delhi came to a close at 6 PM on Saturday. Results will be announced on February 11.
