Delhi's Covid Care Center is 10 times bigger than China's largest hospital, will start this week

New Delhi: Home Minister Amit Shah has entrusted the medical staff of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police to run India's largest quarantine centre for corona patients in South Delhi. More than 10,200 patients will be accommodated in this quarantine centre being built at Radha Swami Satsang Beas Center in Chhatarpur. This centre of Chhatarpur, as big as 15 football fields, has been named Sardar Patel Covid Care Center and Hospital.

A senior home ministry official said that the centre, built temporarily for Corona patients, would be 10 times larger than the one set up in Leicheson, China. The centre in China had facilities to house 1,000 patients. In February, Chinese diplomats released a video of the construction of that hospital.

Home Minister Amit Shah earlier this month asked Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal to find places where the Delhi government could rapidly expand its capacity to keep and treat Corona patients when needed.

After the appeal of the Lieutenant Governor, the spiritual organization Radha Swami Satsang Beas Center was the first to extend a helping hand. Earlier during the lockdown, the centre also opened up some of its ashrams to migrants in other parts of the country. Not only this, the organization has told the government that it can also provide food for the patients.

Amit Shah is expected to visit the centre this weekend. Authorities have been asked to begin operations of 2,000 beds, possibly by Thursday. The remaining beds are targeted to be installed by 3 July.

The Delhi government had earlier estimated that by the end of this month the number of corona patients in Delhi would reach 1 lakh, which would require around 15,000 beds.
