DMK Leader SR Parthiban Wrongly Suspended Amidst Opposition MPs' Disruptions

Update: 2023-12-14 18:47 IST

DMK leader SR Parthiban found himself among the 14 Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) who were suspended from the Lok Sabha for the remainder of the Winter Session. This disciplinary action was a consequence of their involvement in disrupting the proceedings of the House. However, it was later clarified by the government that Parthiban's inclusion in the suspension was a result of a case of mistaken identity.

In a surprising turn of events, it was revealed that SR Parthiban, who is associated with the DMK, was not even present in the Lok Sabha during the disruptions; instead, he was in Chennai. This prompted complaints from DMK MPs, highlighting the apparent error in identifying and suspending a Member who had not contributed to the disruptions.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi acknowledged the mistake, explaining that the inclusion of Parthiban's name was a result of misidentification. Subsequently, a formal request was made to the Speaker to rectify the error by removing the wrongly implicated MP's name from the suspension list. Fortunately, the Speaker accepted this request, rectifying the error and acknowledging that Parthiban was not involved in the disruptions.

The backdrop of the disciplinary action was a series of protests staged by Opposition members in the Lok Sabha, demanding a statement from the government regarding a breach of security in the Parliament. A total of 14 Opposition MPs, comprising 13 from the Lok Sabha and one from the Rajya Sabha, faced suspension for what was deemed as "unruly" conduct in Parliament. The suspended MPs belonged to various political parties, with nine from Congress, two from CPM, one from DMK, and one from CPI. This development highlighted the tense atmosphere and the clashes between the government and the Opposition during the Winter Session.
