Donald Trump India Visit: US President Signs Visitors' Book At Sabarmati Ashram

Ahmedabad: US President Donald Trump accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump visited Mahatma Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad. He was welcomed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who arrived ahead of him at the Ashram. They were joined later by Ivanka Trump and the US President's son-in-law, Jared Kushner. The US President and Melania Trump wrote a message in the visitors book at the Sabarmati Ashram and signed it.

President Trump was shown Mahatma Gandhi's prayer in the corridor and the meeting place where Mahatma Gandhi used to interact with people. He also went around the veranda where Gandhiji spun his Charkha. PM Modi explained how the spinning wheel worked to President Trump and Melania Trump and a volunteer from the Ashram demonstrated it to them. President Trump tried his hand at the at spinning the Charkha.

As the US President and the First Lady went around Sabarmati Ashram, children sang Mahatma Gandhi's favourite Bhajans including, "Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram", in the background.

The US Secret Service had its reservations about including the Sabarmati Ashram, but it was made a part of the itinerary at PM Modi's request, reports said. President Trumps cavalcade left for the Motera Stadium resuming the 22 km long roadshow from the airport.

A few minutes earlier, the US presidential aircraft Air Force One touched down at the Sardar Patel airport in Ahmedabad carrying the first family of the United States.
