Fast forward: towards New India

New Delhi: Invoking the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, PM Narendra Modi in his reply to the President's Address in the Lok Sabha called upon the nation to weigh duties over rights and sought intervention and investment from the corporate India in making country a "5 trillion economy".

Modi sought the unstinted support of the people in building a 'New India' together. "India has shown to the world that duties take precedence over rights.

Rights flow out of duties. Can we take this though forward articulated by a great man," the Prime Minister said quoting an extract of the speech made by former PM Nehru in 1951, just at the release of the Congress manifesto for the first Lok Sabha polls.

In his first speech in the 17th Lok Sabha, the Prime Minister has spelt out some priorities of his government in this second term, by saying: "Let it be our collective endeavour to make India a 5 trillion dollar economy."

Expressing concern over little or no private investment in agriculture sector, the Prime Minister indicated that government would formulate policies and programmes to encourage investment for making warehouses and food processing units.

The Prime Minister said the NDA was given a chance to rule as the people thought it was a way of escaping from the UPA regime.

"I think beyond winning and losing elections. I strive for the welfare of the countrymen. For me, what is satisfying is the opportunity to serve 130 crore Indians and do work that has made a positive difference in the lives of our citizens," he said.

"We have to move together to fulfil the dream of a strong, safe, developed and inclusive nation," Modi said. "We took office again a few weeks ago and I am happy to say we have taken numerous pro-people decisions.

The decisions we have taken will benefit farmers, traders, youngsters and other sections of society. A lot of the major promises we made, we have begun fulfilling them," Modi said.
