Hindu Sena Calls Off Protest March To Shaheen Bagh

Update: 2020-02-02 09:24 IST

New Delhi: The Hindu Sena called off its proposed protest march to Shaheen Bagh scheduled for 11 AM on Sunday. Earlier the Delhi Police had appealed to the organisers of Hindu Sena to call off the march. Police officials also pointed out that permission has not been granted to the protest march.

Meanwhile, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) has also given a call for a counter march to Shaheen Bagh to express their solidarity with the protesters there. The police clarified that they had not granted permission to any such solidarity march either.

Shaheen Bagh became the centre of mild tension once again when a youth fired shots in the air with a country-made weapon. Identified as Kapil Gurjar, the teenager, was overpowered by the Delhi police and is currently under interrogation.

The Congress and Aam Aadmi Party AAP, along with several other opposition parties slammed the BJP and accused it running a virulent campaign which is leading to such violent incidents. On Friday, another youth firing from an illegal weapon, injured a protester outside the Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi and was arrested subsequently.

The AAP has squarely blamed the BJP accusing it of inciting people to violence. The party's senior leader and spokesman, Sanjay Singh, blamed Union Home Minister Amit Shah for being unable to rein in BJP leaders and maintain law and order in the national capital.

Delhi goes to polls on Saturday and results are scheduled to be announced on February 11. AAP is being seen as the favourite in what has now largely been reduced to a two-horse race.
