Home where no cow is turned away

New Delhi: Friederike Irina Bruning, a 63-year-old German woman, who is popularly known as Sudevi Mataji, has been a pioneer and a source of inspiration for all those people who wish to serve animals.

Her focus is on caring for cows that are not cared for by society: The sick, injured and handicapped cows that – despite being so dear to the Lord – are homeless and deeply suffering. Everyday people bring cows to her door, and she never turns them away.

She had left no stone unturned to look after the cows which have been abandoned, or sick or have been left behind on the street loitering around. She has showcased the world that empathy needs no boundary, gender or language. Being a German citizen she came to India and started "Radha Surabhi Gaushala Niketan"in 1996 for stray cows. The gaushala is spread across 3,300 sq yd. Currently, there are 90 workers and 1,800 sick cows which are being nursed.

The Government of India has honoured her with Padma Shri recognising her devotion and empathy for cows which have been considered sacred animals of Hindus. Looking after the cows needs funding and that was the biggest challenge she faced. No government agencies had come forward with their helping hand. The only source of funds was by the rent she receives from her native property in Berlin. But now things are changing and people are coming up to fund her noble cause. Recently, she got a funding of Rs 1 crore from Anil Reddy, owner of Donatekart. Mataji said Donatekart provided an excellent opportunity for people who would like to help a worthy cause but don't have the time to research many different places themselves and fear they might be cheated out of their money.

Straight from Mataji's heart

What are the most common issues you've faced in doing charity?

The biggest issue is people lack the feeling of genuine 'Seva Bhav.' Most of the people are out for earning profit and not to do seva - but trying to do seva on a greater scale without others joining in is like swimming against the stream - very tiring.

What system have you created to take care of these animals after you?

Who will take care of my cows and calves after me I don't know. But I am sure Thakurji will provide the right person just as God has provided me with everything else.
