JNU: Students demand meeting with Vice Chancellor

New Delhi: Students protesting in Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) demanded a meeting with university Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar to discuss the recent fees that was hiked recently. The students entered the JNU administrative building and said they will not leave the premises unless the VC meets with them and discusses the fee hike in detail.

Orders have been passed to disallow any protest within 100 meters vicinity of the administrative building after their protest on Monday. Meanwhile, Shehla Rashid arrived at JNU to support the protesters. The students spoke to the media and said they choose to study in JNU because of the nominal fees. If the high hostel fee is applied to them, they would have no choice but to leave their studies midway.

On, Monday thousands of JNU students led by JNU Students' Union protested against the hike and clashed with the cops on location. The students are currently demanding withdrawal of a draft hostel manual approved by the inter-hall administration. A service charge of Rs 1,700 has been introduced in the new hostel fee structure.

The one-time mess security fee has been increased from Rs 5,500 to Rs 12,000. The rent for a single room has been increased from Rs 20 per month to Rs 600 per month -- a hike of 120%. Rent for a double room has been increased to Rs 300 per month from Rs 10 per month.
