Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan Accuses Congress Of Backing SDPI

Update: 2020-02-03 12:01 IST

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister on Monday, questioned the opposition Congress in the state assembly on its support to Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), according to media reports. The SDPI is a political entity linked to the radical Islamist outfit, Popular Front of India (PFI).

Pinarayi Vijayan remarked that no group or party would be allowed to create unrest in the state. The Kerala chief Minister also asserted that damage to public property such as post offices would not be allowed.

SDPI is said to be involved in violent protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in North Kerala. The leader of opposition in Kerala assembly, Congress's Ramesh Chennitala has, in turn, accused the ruling CPM of protecting SDPI. While the two parties trade charges, the Kerala chief minister's assertion is a strong rap to the opposition Congress party on the issue.

SDPI has also come under the scanner of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for its extremist activities. SDPI activists were also allegedly involved in the murder of a CPM worker some years ago.

The PFI is also under investigation by NIA for its links to violent incidents during anti-CAA protests in UP and elsewhere in the country. The UP police told the media on Monday morning that 108 PFI activists have been arrested for their involvement in protests against the CAA and National Register of Citizens (NRC) in various parts of the state.
